Julia A Purnell Museum, Snow Hill

The Julia A. Purnell Museum is a true hidden gem for anyone who loves history, art, and local stories. Housed in a beautifully preserved former church building dating back to 1891, this museum offers a unique glimpse into the life and heritage of Worcester County and the people who helped shape it.

A Museum with a Personal Legacy

The museum was originally founded in 1942 by William Purnell to display the remarkable needlework and textile art of his mother, Julia A. Purnell (1843–1943), a Snow Hill native whose creative spirit flourished late in life. Julia began crafting intricate needlework well into her eighties and created over a thousand detailed pieces, from depictions of homes and churches to gardens and townsfolk scenes earning her recognition and admiration both locally and beyond.

After Julia’s passing just after her 100th birthday, her collection became the foundation for the museum and continued to grow as local residents generously contributed artifacts and memorabilia that reflect the rich tapestry of life on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

What You’ll See Inside

Today, the museum houses an ever-expanding collection of more than 10,000 artifacts that tell the story of daily life in Worcester County over the centuries. Visitors can explore:

  • Julia Purnell’s exquisite needlework and textiles, showcasing the craftsmanship of an extraordinary local artist.

  • Victorian-era clothing and household items, transporting you to life in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

  • Native American artifacts and exhibits that reflect the deep history of the region’s earliest inhabitants.

  • Tools, toys, and curios from daily life in a bygone era, including displays that bring local stories vividly to life.

This blend of personal artistry and community history makes a visit here meaningful for history buffs, families, and curious travelers alike.
