On the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the nonprofit organization Women Supporting Women (WSW) has become a vital lifeline for those impacted by breast cancer. Founded in 1993, on the belief that no one should face breast cancer alone, WSW’s mission is to provide awareness, education, and support resources to women and men survivors.
At its core, Women Supporting Women aims to empower individuals with breast cancer through awareness, education, and support. Since its inception, the organization has been dedicated to providing free prostheses, prostheses bras, and wigs. All of these items are very expensive for survivors. The group also provides informational tote bags to everyone recently diagnosed. The bags include educational material, handbook, and support partner handbook.
The support services offered by Women Supporting Women are wide-ranging and personalized. Whether it’s one-on-one counseling, facilitator led support groups, or assistance with navigating the complexities of breast cancer treatment, WSW tailors its services to meet each individual’s unique needs. The organization also offers free wigs, scarves, hats, bras, lift chair loaners, and prostheses to those who have undergone surgery, helping survivors regain their confidence and dignity during a difficult time.
To sustain their mission and raise awareness, Women Supporting Women hosts a number of community events throughout the year. Their Walk for Awareness and WSW Bingo events bring people together to support the cause and raise funds for breast cancer awareness and support services. These events not only generate much-needed financial resources but also foster a sense of solidarity among survivors, supporters, and the broader community.
