When Ocean Downs Casino planned its 2018 expansion and added table games, it was a great opportunity to leverage a workforce training partnership with the Department of Labor through the Earn Maryland program. As the only casino offering table games in the region, General Manager Bobbi Sample needed to nurture a pipeline of prospective employees with specialized dealing skills. Designed to provide customized skills training to unemployed, underemployed and incumbent workers, the program was perfectly positioned to prepare county residents for careers in Maryland’s growing casino industry. The partnership resulted in 54 participants completing the blackjack training program and receiving their gaming license to become a dealer. And every one of them was subsequently hired by Ocean Downs. The program was also used for Dealers to learn craps and roulette to increase their versatility and prepare for future promotions.
