Fashioning a Family-Focused Small Business for New Moms

Necessity is the mother of invention. After her son Oliver was born, Emily Vocke found that new moms like herself didn’t have access to unique baby clothing and gifts. With a degree in Fashion Marketing, she opened Heart of Gold Kids(link is external) in her hometown to offer quality clothes, parenting essentials, and a place for new moms to connect.

Today, Emily and her two year-round employees serve almost 10,000 customers annually. And – thanks to a new e-commerce website – she’s able to provide the same locally-made and specialty items to clients around the country who discovered her shop while visiting Berlin.

“Owning a business and raising my family in Maryland’s Coast is very special to us,” said Emily. “We are lucky to live in such a beautiful place where it’s possible to enjoy the quaint historical town of Berlin and pristine beaches all in the same day.”

Inspired by her three young children, everything at Heart of Gold has been kid-tested and mom-proven by the Vocke family. Emily is excited to grow her business online and maintain her mom-life balance while staying firmly grounded in her community.

Heart of Gold Kids is located at 27 Main Street in Berlin. For information on starting a business in one of America’s Coolest Small Towns, contact Ivy Wells(link sends e-mail), Director of Economic and Community Development(link is external) at (410) 629-1722.
